Are we mere consumers?
A survey into the Singaporean identity in architecture 2017 The question of the Singapore Identity has always been inhibiting in the consciousness of the people and the government since our separation from Malaysia in 1965. It is no less a question too that continues to encroach upon the minds of practitioners of the built environment. What is the architectural language of Singapore? If the built environment is inherently a part of any national identity; a symbolism, a physical manifestation and reflection of the collective consciousness of a certain society, in which the psyche of its inhabitants who dwell in it are constantly influenced and formed, what then renders our built environment to be quintessentially Singaporean? to download: http://bit.ly/singarchi A E S T H E T I C S,
the Uncanny Haunted Child of the Consumerist Fantasy 2019 “ A E S T H E T I C S ” is the visual component of Vaporwave music which began in the late 2010s, appropriating and reconstituting into new compositions the cognitive and visual trappings of the 80s to the early 00s. As an internet phenomenon, it is both global in its outreach, as well as participatory in nature. This essay aims to investigate AESTHETICS as an uncanny haunting product of the perpetuation of the Consumerist Fantasy in our capitalistic society and as a simulacra to a lost future. to download: http://bit.ly/aestheticsghosts |
Wabi-Sabi in Ando's Spaces
2017 "To know simplicity, one must first understand complexity." Wabi Sabi can be understood when one understands complexity and it is a philosophy that is especially relevant today as it was first formulated more than 700 years ago. Its presence links the otherwise distinct and separate physical and spiritual realms and transcends through every medium, from everyday life, art, design to architecture. Tadao Ando, one of Japan's most prominent architects, has physically manifested this philosophy in many of his works. to download: http://bit.ly/wabiando |
